Test: Hunting a U-Boat

You are on escort duty as part of the defense screen around a convoy You are covering the starboard astern sector of the convoy. Your ASDIC operator tells the captain that he has a contact. The contact is bearing Starboard 45 degrees from your current course. The captain signals the escort command ship and receives the o.k. to begin hunting. The contact stays strong as you head towards the position then it stops.



What should your captain order?

A. Immediately begin dropping depth charges in the area

B. Stop the ship and wait for the contact to resume. Your own propellers may be making too much noise

C. Stop the hunt, return to your station and resume regular escort duties

D. Slowly circle the area and wait for a new contact
