August 19, 1942 6,000 Allied Troops, including 5,000 Canadians, raid the French coastal town of Dieppe.

The Dieppe raid plan called for five separate attacks over a 16 kilometre stretch of shoreline. The main force would attack the harbour and town of Dieppe directly. This attack would commence one half hour after two flanking attacks, one east, one west, against German artillery batteries. The objectives for the western force were the cliff top artillery batteries at Puys and Varengeville, 4 kilometres to the west of the town. The objectives for the third force were the artillery batteries at Pourville to the east of the town.
