June 4 -September, 1916 The Brusilov Offensive on the Eastern Front

Russian forces using new tactics developed by General Brusilov break through the Austrian lines near Lviv. The attack quickly becomes bogged down when other Russian units fail to meet their objectives due to poor planning and execution. Over the next four months the two sides suffer over 1 million casualties. The German commanders are very impressed with Brusilov's "shock troop" infiltration tactics and begin to develop their own "Strumtrooper" version to use against the Western Allies.
